Student at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy.

Graduated from the Chuguyev Higher Air Force School in Ukraine in 1957

He was a fighter pilot for the Soviet Air Force before he became a Cosmonaut.

Contribution to Space Travel

He walked in space for the first time on March 18, 1965. Alexi Leonov floated out of Voskhod 2, secured to the spacecraft by only a safety line.  He pushed off of the craft and let himself drift 17.5 feet away before reeling himself back in.  Fortunately, he also managed to reenter the craft and return home to tell every one about it.

 

Flew in first docking mission between American and Soviet spacecraft.

Leonov shook hands with Tom Stafford, the American Apollo commander, through the open hatchway connecting the spacecrafts from two different nations for the first time.

Leonov was among the first chosen 20 Cosmonauts. He was the first man to walk in space beating American Astronaut Ed White by three months.
