Yuri  Gagarin

Childhood / Family

His father was a farmer, carpenter, cabinetmaker, and a bricklayer. His mom was a milkmaid. Yuri has three brothers and sisters. Married with two children.

Education

Yuri attended the local school for six years and continued his education at vocational and technical schools.  His favorite subject was mathematics.

Graduated from Lyberts School in 1951, Saratov Aeroclub Aerotechnical School in 1955, Voroshilov First Chkalovsk Military Fighter School in 1957.

Contribution to Space Travel

In the space ship Vostok 1, he orbited earth one time at an altitude of 187 ¾ miles for 108 minutes and 18,000 miles an hour.  He was the first man to see that the earth was indeed round, mostly water, and magnificent.

He loved swimming, fishing, camping and hunting. He loved cars.

Interesting Fact(s)

During the war, the Nazis threw his family out of their home and took away two of his sisters.  Yuri helped his parents dig a dugout where they lived until the war was over.

Status

Yuri was killed in a test plane crash on March 27, 1968.
