After the attack on Pearl Harbor people of the United States were in a panic. They thought that the Japanese might attack the mainland. They also thought that the Japanese-Americans living in the United States might be spies, that is why they put them in internment camps.

In 1942 Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family were taken to an internment camp at Manzanar in California. Jeanne was seven years old when this happened.

The camp was surrounded by barbed wire with heavily armed guards in watch towers. The barracks were poorly made and had holes in the floor and roof.

Over time Jeanne and the other children got sick with stomach cramps and fevers because of spoiled food.

After a riot, due to poor conditions at the camp, schools were opened for the children and other conditions improved.
