Interview

My grandma was a little girl when World War II started. Read the following interview I had with her about growing up during the War.

How old where you when the war started?
Four years old.

Did you have family in the war?
Yes, three brothers named Leo, Archie, and Tom

How long where your brothers in the war?
Leo was in the war for five years and never was able to come home to visit, Archie had two kids and was married and was in the war for 3 ½ years, and Tom was in the war 2 years.

How old where your brothers?
Leo was 26, Archie was 21, and Tom had just turned 18.

How did you feel about your brothers going into the war?
Very upset and scared!

How did your parents feel about your brothers going into the war?
The same, very scared and upset and they listened to the radio and read the newspaper a lot! But we were all glad that they were not wounded! You see there were only three telephones in the small town and we owned one of them. When some of the troops would call and ask to talk, to their parents and family, we would have to run and get them . When a troop train came the whole town made a dinner and we would feed them at the church . We had to have food and gas stamps to be able to get food and gas. We could not just pay for them but, luckily it was only some food that you had to have food stamps for!

How old where you when the war ended?
I was about nine or ten.
