British Evacuation
The year was 1939 and Great Britain was being bombed heavily by Germany in what we know as World War II.

The British Government decided on a program of evacuation for women and children. The program was voluntary and half of all the families chose to be separated from their families, but the other half chose to let their wives and children go for their safety. The women and children were sent to the country side or Australia or Canada even the U.S.

Over 300,000 women and children left for a different place to live at that time. No one knew if the women and children would make it to their destinations or ever come home. Many of the children where happy they were going somewhere different, but some where not. For most children the experience was a good one and they became attached to the families that took them in. For others though, it was a frightening and even an abusive situation. By the end of the war most children were able to return home to their families. For some though, there were no homes or families to return to.
