Magellan was programmed to do a lot of its own "thinking" if problems arise.. Magellan took advantage of advances in fault-detection software design to analyze problems that occur and carried out a series of alternative remedies.

Spacecraft operation was controlled for several days at a time by commands sent from Earth and stored in the CDS.
