Approach Stage

45 days before the entry of the rovers into the Martian atmosphere, the approach stage begins. In this stage various preparations are done in order to ensure a safe entry. It lasts until the spacecraft enters the Martian atmosphere, which extends 3522.2 kilometers (from the center of the red planet).

The mission team will switch to "Mars time" during this phase. (The Martian day, or sol, is about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day). In the approach phase the final three trajectory correction maneuvers are done. The spacecraft's positions are monitored for ensuring safe entry to the martian surface.
