Two solar panels laterally mounted to its center were designed and formulated and a detachable recovery module for returning and transmitting data, information and materials to the ground.

Crews Visited

3 spacecrafts flew to Salyut 5 and the 4 th visit was cancelled due to station's lack of fuel.

  • Soyuz 21 was the first mission to this space station. It was launched on 7 th July 1976 and it returned back on 24 th August. The crew consisted of Boris Volynov and Vitaly Zholobov
  • Soyuz 23 launched on Oct 15, 1976 was the 2 nd visit to the station. It consisted of Vyacheslav Zudov and Valery Rozhdestvensk. However, it failed due to certain technical problems.
  • Soyuz 24 was the last visit to the station. Launched on Feb. 8, 1977 consisted of Yuri Glazkov and Viktor Gorbatko.
