Designing

The physical conditions prevalent in space would have to be kept in mind while designing a space station. Its construction should be such that it disassembles into individual components so that these components could be easily transported into outer space. The reassembling of the components should also be possible without any difficulty in space. To lower the transportation cost it is advisable to use only lightweight metals.

The space station must be enclosed and completely sealed thus permitting normal atmospheric conditions, which can be maintained by artificial means. To reduce the danger of escaping air, it is advisable to partition the space station into appropriate compartments. The movement inside the space station is easily possible since all the rooms are inter-connected and filled with air.

To reach outside of the space station air locks are used. It is a chamber consisting of 2 airtight sealed doors one of which leads to outside empty space and the other to the inside of the space station.

All the operations of the space stations must make abundant use of the sun's radiations rather than the energy available internally especially for recycling the spent consumables.

These are some of the points that have to be kept in mind while designing a space station. Every space station has some basic requirements, which enable it to function properly. Let us see what these requirements are:
