Deep Space 2

Dimensions

The Deep Space 2 probes were made of three parts, namely.

•  Aeroshell- it was 275mm high and 350mm in diameter. It enclosed the probe and protected it from heat of atmospheric entry. It was made of a ceramic material and has a mass of 1.165kg.

•  Aftbody- it is a short cylinder 105.3mm high and 136mm in diameter. It is equipped with primary batteries, pressure sensors, atmospheric accelerometer and communication equipment. It is designed in a manner, which allowed it to stay above the surface after impact and provide radio communications.

•  Forebody - it was also called the Penetrator. It a long thin cylinder, 105.6mm in length and 35mm in diameter. It had a mass of 0.670kg.

Power

Two non-rechargeable lithium-thionyl chloride batteries provided power to the probes. These batteries had a capacity of 600 milliamp hours.

Communication

All communication was made through s-band.
