Landing Subsystem A spacecraft designed to land on planet must be provided with subsystems which enable them to land in a controlled manner and guide to soft landing, these subsystem are called landing subsystems. Parachute: An apparatus used to retard free fall, consisting of a light, usually hemispherical canopy attached by cords and stored folded until deployed in descent. Drogue: A small parachute used to slow and stabilize a spacecraft, usually preceding deployment of a main landing parachute. Descent engine: The rocket used to power a spacecraft as it makes a controlled landing on the surface of a planet or moon.
