Electrostatic Propulsion This technique of propulsion utilizes electrostatic energy, i.e. energy due to electric charges on materials is used to propel rockets. Since ions are used for this, the technique is also called as ion propulsion technique. Principle In an ion rocket, the electrons from the atoms are striped off. Thus they are converted to ions. These atoms now have a net positive electric charge. Electrical forces accelerate these ions to high temperature without the use of thermal energy.
