Water Hyacinth

(Eichhornia crassipes)

By: Linnea N.

The Water Hyacinth originated from South America. It is a floating water plant that can grow up to 3 feet tall. In just twelve days the population can double! The part of the plant that is on top of the water has round and shiny green leaves and purplish-blue or lavender to pinkish flowers. It is thought by some to be one of the worst weeds. Just a few years ago in Florida, this pesty plant was covering up to 125,000 acres of water and up to 200 tons per acre of water. It can stop water traffic, boats and fish with its large underwater roots. It will exclude other plants on the surface of the water. Some western nurseries in the United States sell the Water Hyacinth for its flowers beauty. Unfortunately, the plant creates good breeding conditions for mosquitoes. It has the ability to get rid of nutrients in the water that other organisms need. Water Hyacinth weevils help control the population of Water Hyacinths by feeding on it. For more information go to:
