     Stage IV

  • Deepest sleep of the four stages.
  • Sometimes synonymous for "slow wave sleep."
  • Comprises 12/15 % of total sleep.
  • Sleep terrors, and sleep walking may occur in this stage.
  • Very similar to stage 3.
  • Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM)
  • Loss of muscle tone.
  • Dreaming occurs in this stage.
  • After all stages end, the cycle continues throughout the night.
