Welcome to the
Great Depression Website, where you may strengthen your knowledge
on one of the most tragic periods of the United States past.
This site is made especially for those who appreciate past events
that lead to current laws, beliefs, structure, and every day life.
And, for those of you who have been forced to come here through assignments,
we hope to further your interest.
This period of the Great Depression, beginning with the stock market
crash on October 29, 1929, and ending with World War II, which began
in 1939 (although we didn’t enter until 1941) proves to be the
worst yet in terms of American economics. Our nation practically fell
apart during this time when 25 percent of United States citizens couldn’t
get work—by today’s standards 8 percent without work is
huge. People starved while others with surplus wasted, some lived
in boxes, while others came home to a house caked with dirt, and some
committed suicide with absolutely no hope left, while others were
checked into mental institutions, no doubt many did so only for room
and board.
In this site, you will learn about these situations and much more.
We hope to provide you with useful information that will stay with
you throughout your study on this topic. Enjoy!
