               Location: Washington                  Latitude: 46.20 N

               Longitude: 122.18 W                         Height: 2,549 Meters

Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. It was a beautiful Sunday, when not many campers, loggers, or scientists were around. Because of the mountain's silence, not even the scientists could predict what was going to happen. Then at 8:32 a.m. the volcano erupted strongly with large amounts of lava. The elevation of the mountain dropped from 9,677 feet to 8,363 feet. Mt. St. Helens was once the 9th highest peak in Washington, and it dropped to the 30th highest peak in Washington. This is now a famous volcano because of its eruption!
