Problem
Water Hyacinth causes a lot of problems. It grows very fast and makes thick mats on the rivers, lakes and ponds. Boats cannot go through this. So, water hyacinth stops boating, water skiing, and swimming. This is bad for tourism. Even worse, water hyacinth has caused people to starve. Because of it, people in infested areas cannot grow gardens or catch fish. People can no longer use the rivers to transport goods. More typically, water-hyacinth damages water quality by blocking sunlight and oxygen and slowing the water's flow. Fish and other river creatures die because of a lack of oxygen caused by the water hyacinth. Mosquitos breed in amongst the water hyacinth and this adds to the spread of diseases .
