Scientific name of the Water Hyacinth is Eichhornia crassipes. Water hyacinths a member of the pickerel weed family . It is beautiful flower with light purple petals. Water hyacinth floats in the water. It has thick green leaves which help it float. Water Hyacinth is native of Amazon. Because it is so beautiful, many people wanted it in its ponds and rivers. So, Water Hyacinth became very popular all over the world. People started to bring Water Hyacinth from its native place everywhere in the world. But, people did not know the trouble they are getting into. They only saw a beautiful flower! They did not realize it was a horrible problem, so big that some people call the Water Hyacinth " the world's worst water plant.Its growth rate is among the highest of any plant known: hyacinth populations can double in as little as 12 days. It forms dense mats
but has become naturalized in many warm areas of the world: Central America, North America (California and southern states), Africa, India, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Water hyacinths grow over a wide variety of wetland types from lakes, streams, ponds, waterways, ditches, and backwater areas.In Africa it infests every major river and nearly every major freshwater lake. In the United States, it flourishes in hundreds of bodies of water in Hawaii and California and throughout the South from Texas to the Carolinas
