Ancient people created myths to explain things that they could not explain. Things in nature that people didn't understand were often explained with gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures. Early humans didn't have the technology to explain ideas scientifically so instead they created fictional creatures and interesting and creative tall tales. They found myths to be easier to believe than trying to think of other explanations.
Even today some people believe all the ancient myths. All those people trying to take a picture of the Loch Ness Monster believe that it exists. Some fiction and fantasy lovers will also believe you if you say that you've seen a mythical or fictional creature.
Another way that myths may have began was when people tried to describe things to other people. It's like playing telephone. By the time the last person receives your message it may be all twisted and not make sense. Sometimes if people are unsure of details they will give out the wrong information. All the details get passed on to other people and POOF you have your new mythical creature. However, all these creatures, although they do not exist, have made the history of our world colorful and interesting.
