Medusa

The Origin

Medusa was once a beautiful girl with golden curls. But when she foolishly compared herself to the goddess Athena, she was robbed of her beauty and her curls were turned into hissing serpents. Her eyes turn men to stone. Her cave is littered with stone men and animals accidentally caught in her gaze.

The Demise

Perseus wanted to kill Medusa, but did not know any way to do so. The god Hermes gave him winged sandals and the goddess Athena gave him a magical shield. He went to her cave and found her reflection in the shield. Guided by the image, he cut off her head.

Outside the cave, there was a maiden named Andromeda chained to a rock by the sea. She was being sacrificed to the sea monster so it would not attack her father's kingdom. He fought the beast and rescued her.

Perseus put the head in a bag and flew back to his father's land. Three drops of blood fell from the bag, creating three evil nymphs, but that is another story.

He loved Andromeda very much, but she was already promised to another man. Persues went to him and turned him to stone with Medusa's head. Then they lived and ruled happily ever after until their deaths. They were put into the sky as constellations by Zeus.
