Trick rules: The giant slalom is almost a race downhill. Gates are put along the hill. The object is to go as fast as you can, down the hill. Each snowboarder has two chances to get better timing; if a gate is missed, you will be disqualified. The half pipe is like freestyle skiing; they do tricks and jumps with a trench shaped like a U. Their speed comes from going up and down the sides of the U.

How the judges decide on a winner: The five judges each give the boarder a different score based on moves, spins, landing, flips and the height of the trick.
