Ice Skating
How it is scored: Single and pair events both have two parts to them,
the free skate and short program. In the free skate, there are no
required elements, falling and or omitting elements count against the
skater only if they perform overall difficulty of the program or if
they disrupt the flow of the program. In the short program, the
skaters must operate eight required elements: jumps, spins and foot
sequence. There are mandatory deductions for failures. Skaters are not
aloud to do extra elements or retry missed elements.
How
the judges decide on a winner and top skaters: Judges rate how a
skater presents himself or herself as how a program relates to the
music, how the skater utilizes speed and the ice surface. Judges award
a presentation mark in both free skate and short program of men and
women’s competition. The United States has a history of top skaters
such as Peggy Flemind, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Debi Thomas,
Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski.
