History Of Marijuana

Where Marijuana Came From- Marijuana was first found in China around 4000 B.C. They first used it for hemp fiber to make rope. They grew the marijuana plant to make hemp. They would beat the plant with stone beaters to make hemp fiber, then they would twist it to make rope. Hemp has been found in Egyptian tombs. Greeks and Romans also used hemp rope. The Romans took it to Europe.

When Marijuana Became a Medicine- Marijuana was first smoked about five thousand years ago, which is in 3000 B.C. The earliest record of it being used as a medicine was in China. It was recommended for malaria, beriberi, constipation, rheumatic pains, and absent-mindedness.

In ancient India, they used it to relieve headaches, whooping cough, prolong life, improve judgment, lower fevers, induce sleep, and cure dysentery. They even used it to control dandruff!

They either used it as Bhang, which was made into candy or tea, Ganja, which was smoked and Charas which was also smoked.

When Marijuana was Introduced to United States- The Pilgrims brought the marijuana plant to the New World to make hemp rope. Smoking of marijuana wasn't introduced to the United States until the 1920's, when it was brought to the U.S. from Mexico. It was recommended for a variety of disorders, and was listed as an official drug until 1937.

Today, eight states have legalized marijuana as a medicine, but the Federal law says marijuana is illegal. The eight states are Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. On May 14, 2001, the Supreme Court ruled that medical marijuana is illegal. They did not overturn the state laws, but said that if people use marijuana for medicine, they are breaking federal law.
