DAIRY PRODUCTS People have been using dairy products since the beginning of times.  One of the most important dairy products is MILK. Many animals produce milk, but the dairy cow is the most important milk animals in the world. 90% of world's milk is produced by cows. Milk is made from cows, which are female cattle.In order to produce milk, a cow first has to have a calf.  Milk is a great source of nutrition. It provides lots of Calcium for buiolding strong bones. Dairy products are so important that they have their own group on the food pyramid! It is recommended that kids our age have at least three servings of dairy each day. This doesn't mean you have to dring three glasses of white milk. There are many other dairy products around the world. Some of those products are yougurt, cheese and ice cream.

ARE YOU WEARING A COW TODAY? Cattle is sometimes used to make leather. Leather is made of the cow skin. It is called cowhide before it is made into . The best cowhide comes from the oxen. There are two stages in making leather from the cowhide. This first stage is called wet-blue processing.  In this stage all flesh is removed from the hide, it is soaked and all hair is removed. Than the hide is added lime to get out protein. The hide is delimed(or the lime is taken out). Leather makers add stuff to make leather softer and cleaner and They also add stuff that will protect it from bacteria or take in too much water.. Finally,  water is squeezed out. Now they send their hide to the second step which is called finishing. In this stage they will cut, tan (or change color) and buff (change surface). Now the leather is ready to make other products. Some leather products made of cows are clothing, boots and shoes, bags, belts, hats, and sometimes even furniture

BUT DID YOU KNOW THIS? So everyone knows about meat, dairy, and leather? But there are many other products that you never thought come from cow!  Almost everything on a cow can be used. On a 1000 pond cow, 400 will go to meat and 600 to other products. HERE ARE SOME: Bone, Horn, Hooves, & Gelatin Combs, gelatin candy (Gummy Bears), marshmallows, mayonnaise, gelatin, photographic film, steel ball bearings with bone charcoal, fine bone china, pet food, and vitamin capsules/gel coatings. Hide & Hair Insulation, paint brushes, glue for bookmaking and band aids, clothes, shoes, luggage, saddles, furniture, automobiles, volleyballs, basketballs, and baseball gloves. Fats and Fatty Acids Shampoo, soaps, shaving creams, cosmetics, deodorants, candles, crayons, floor wax, detergents, hydraulic break fluid, plastics, insecticides, paints, perfumes, and synthetic rubber.
