Attachment and fusion inhibitors are new classes of anti-HIV drugs. They interrupt the HIV virus at the very beginning of its life cycle by preventing the virus from attaching itself to the host and breaking through the cell membrane.
| Enfuvirtide (Fuzeon, T-20) |
Enfuvirtide is an antiviral drug used for people with HIV infection. Fuzeon is always used with other HIV drugs, and when taken with other antiviral drugs, it can reduce one's viral load to extremely low levels, and increase one's T-cell counts. It has to be injected because the drug is destroyed by stomach acid when swallowed. Adults inject it twice a day.
