The ship you are going to be using is a standard NASA space shuttle. The exterior consists of two solid rocket boosters or SRBs attached to the main fuel tank. The chance of colliding with space debris such as asteroids are 1 in 10 flights, hopefully you will not be that person! The main engines produce almost 8 million pounds of thrust and operate until the ship reaches its orbit. When the ship reaches orbit, its external tank will be burned up into the atmosphere and your ship will decrease in weight. Your shuttle's remote manipulator weighs around 905 pounds on earth but can carry approximately 66,000 pounds of freight during your flight in space. Both of your shuttle's solid rocket monitors burn 5 tons of propellant per second! The hydrogen in your space shuttle's main engine is -423 degrees Fahrenheit and when burned, it reaches 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Three of your engines and two of your rocket boosters can generate almost 7.3 million pounds of thrust at lift-off. About 8 minutes after lift-off, your space shuttle can accelerate to a speed of more than 17,000 miles per hour. Get ready for lift-off! |
