A pilot astronaut plays a key role in a shuttle crew. They are either the commander or the pilot. Pilot astronauts are responsible for the shuttle, the crew, the mission, and the safety of his/her crew. In order to be selected as a pilot astronaut there are certain academic goals that need to be met, such as a bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, mathematics or biological science. A candidate must have had 1000 hours flying time in a jet aircraft. To pass as a pilot astronaut you also have to meet some physical goals. Your distance visual accuracy cannot be greater than 20/50 uncorrected, without glasses. You must have a corrected accuracy, with glasses or another vision aid, of 20/20. A pilot astronaut must have a blood pressure under 140 over 90. The astronaut has to be between five feet four inches to six feet four inches tall. In order to be a pilot astronaut, you must be an American citizen. |
