The History of NASA
1958 NASA Space Program Started
Mercury Missions Begin- These missions honored President Kennedy. NASA wanted to discover the true limits of the universe. 1961
Gemini Missions Begin- The goal for Gemini was to let a man walk in space and send a crew to live in space for 2 weeks. 1968 Apollo Missions Begin- The goal for Apollo Missions were to send a man to the moon. 1969 Apollo 11 lands on the moon- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin Jr. were on the ship that landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. 1970 Apollo 13 returns to Earth due to technical malfunctions- The crew of Apollo 13 wanted to be the second crew to land on the moon.
1973 The Skylab project Begins- The Skylab Project focused on making a space station. 1981 First space shuttle launched- This was the greatest accomplishment for NASA. The space shuttle revolutionized space travel. 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia Accident- The Columbia Incident was one of the few fatal space accidents. Due to a missing heat panel the Columbia space shuttle burned up in the atmosphere. 2005 and in the Future Mars Rover Mission- NASA is focused on landing and living on the moon. In the Future Living on the Moon- President Bush proposes to land and live on the moon to expand our knowledge of space.
