Welcome. In order to be an astronaut, learning about the history of NASA will aide you in your training. NASA first started on October 1, 1958. NASA stands for The National Aeronautics and Space Administration. America began the operation of NASA because America wanted to be ahead in technology. NASA began space missions within months of its creation, and has made historic achievements in many areas of aeronautics and space research. The first human flights into space conducted by NASA were the Projects Mercury and Gemini, which took place in the 1960's. Later came the Apollo, Skylab, and then the Space Shuttle Program, which still advances today. |
