What keeps the sun shining? It is hard to believe but all the stars in the sky are like suns. Our sun is really a star; it is the closest star to the Earth. Without the energy from the sun life on Earth would have never started. The sun is 93,000,000 miles away from Earth and 1,300,000 times the size of Earth. The sun is not solid; it is a giant ball of gas. The temperature of the surface of the sun is about 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Today most scientists believe that changing matter into energy creates the heat of the sun. The sun keeps changing because it is constantly changing matter into energy.
