Many people have heard about the Milky Way but do not know what it exactly is. The Milky Way is the galaxy that we live in. Our entire solar system is located in the Milky Way. But what is a galaxy? A galaxy is a huge gathering of stars, gas, and dust, bound by gravity. A galaxy can have a mass anywhere from 100,000 to 10 trillion times bigger than our sun. There are three shapes of galaxies, spiral, elliptical, and irregular (the Milky Way is a spiral). It is estimated that the Milky Way contains trillions of stars. It is named after the soft milky glow you can see from earth on clear nights.
