Our Model Volcano

We made three volcano models. For all of them, we taped an empty bottle on to cardboard. Then we taped balled up newspaper around the bottle. This makes it light and easy to carry.

The first one we put plaster of paris on it. It's messy and the volcano is heavy. You have to be sure to get the plaster of paris off because it can burn your skin. You don't want to breathe the dust either.

The other one we put foam on it. You get the foam at a hardware store. It comes out like whipping cream and it's light.

The last one we covered with foil. It makes it looks like a mountain and it's really light.

Then we spray painted them brown. To make the volcano erupt, you put in a drop of red food coloring, vinegar, then baking soda. There's a chemical reaction that makes it look like it's foaming. If you put in a little dish soap it makes it foam even more. Here are pictures of us building the volcanoes.
