
Yoga came to United States in the mid 1800s. Swami Vivekananda was at the Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. He traveled around in the U.S.A. and taught yoga, but as he taught yoga people got interested and yoga got popular.
Richard Hittleman had a tv show in 1961 about yoga. He helped people learn yoga on his tv show. Ten years later there was a show called Lilia’s Yoga. She was on public television. Television showed yoga to a lot of people that hadn’t seen or tried it before. The hippies in the 60's were trying to make up their own ways.
Today lots of people do yoga. Here are some of the famous people who do yoga: The first one is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He was a famous basketball player. Another person is Nick Cage. He is an actor on the movie Leaving Las Vegas. Another person is Jamie Lee Curtis. She was an actor in the movie Freaky Friday.
