Dangers of the Canal

 


Below is the text of an inquiry by New York State into the death of Mr. Thomas Kerrald, who on Nov. 11, 1886 fell into and drowned in the D & H Canal

Text Box: This is a picture of the Inquisition taken for the people of the state New York. This photo says: "An inquisition taken for the people of the state of New York on the towing path of the Delaware and Hudson canal at the Rocky Bridge in the Town of Marbletown in [?] county of Ulster on the 16th day of Feb. 1867 before Mr. Daniel Bodley one of the Justices of the Peace in and for said country upon the view of the body of Thomas Kerrold then and there lying dead upon the oaths of Charles Hardenburg John A Bodley J.H Hasbrouck James Burk W m H Krom Richard Stokes Matthew Lefever Jacob D Sigeroe good and lawful men of the said county who being only sworn to inquire on the part of the People of the State of New York into all the circumstances attending the death of the said Thomas Kerrold and by whom the same was produced and in what manner and when and where the said Thomas Kerrold came to his death do say upon their oaths as aforesaid that the said Thomas Kerrold on or about the 11th day of Nov 1886 in the said  county of aforesaid fell into the Delaware and Hudson Canal situate in the town of Marbletown Marbletown aforesaid and then and there casually accidently and by misfortune was suffocated and drowned in the water of the said canal of which suffocating and drowning the said Thomas Kerrold then [?] died and so the juror aforesaid upon their upon oaths aforesaid do say that the say that the said Thomas Kerrold in this manner was by mean aforesaid casually accidentally and not otherwise the [?] whereof as well the said coroner as the jurors aforesaid have to this inquisition set there hands and seals of  this 16th day of Feb. 1867 the state of inquisition as aforesaid.
