Canal Locks
In the D&H canal there were canal locks. The canal ran through rough terrain. The barges had a hard time getting up hills. The locks were a solution to that problem.
HOW THE LOCKS WORKED
The locks were just like stairs. When a barge came to a hill they would use the locks. The lock tender would open the valve and the water would seek its own level. When the water was even the lock tender would open the door, and the barge would flow through. When a barge had to go up a hill it was the same thing but backwards. The lock tender would open the valve and the water from one side would flow into the other side to seek its own level. Once the water sought its own level the barge would flow through. This is how the canal locks were used.
