Aqueduct over the Rondout Creek at High Falls

 

This is the D&H canal. In this picture the D&H canal  Aqueduct is going over the Rondout Creek.  There is a barge going down the D&H canal aqueduct.  In the picture you can see the D&H canal is only approximately fifteen feet wide.  You can also see that the Rondout Creek is only about twenty feet wide.  The barge in this picture is carrying coal to New York City. How do you think the barges would get over the Rondout Creek if there were no bridge to go on?
