PRINCESS
ETHLINN
Balor the Formorian king
heard that he would be slain by his grandson in a Druidic prophecy.
He had one daughter named Ethlinn. To avoid this prophecy
he imprisoned her in a high tower that was in Tory Island.
The king had her with twelve matrons whose jobs were to prevent
her from seeing the face of a man or to know that there were people
of the opposite sex. Ethlinn grew up to be a princess with
surpassing beauty.
On the mainland there were three brothers named Kian, Sawan, and
Goban. Kian had a magical cow that had milk that was so
abundant that everyone wanted this cow. Kian had to have
her under protection.
Balor the king was determined to get this cow. One day Sawan
and Kian went to the forge. Kian went into the forge while
Sawan stayed outside with the cow. Balor went and changed
himself into a little redheaded boy. Balor tricked Sawan
into thinking that Kian was going to cheat him out of the good
metal and so Sawan went into the forge to straighten things out.
Balor then stole the cow and took her off to Tory Island.
Kian wanted revenge on Balor so he went to the druidess named
Birog. Kian dressed himself as a women and he went with
Birog to Tory Island. They went to Ethlinn's guardians and
said they were two noble ladies that were cast upon shore from
escaping an abductor and they begged for shelter. Birog
put the guardians under and enchanted slumber and Kian went up
to Ethlinn. When the guardians woke up Kian and Birog were
gone but the guardians soon found out that Ethlinn was pregnant.
The guardians tried to tell her that it was all a dream but she
later had three sons.
When Balor found out about this he commanded that the three infants
be drowned in a whirlpool off the Irish Coast. The person
who was supposed to do this wrapped them up in a sheet but on
the way to the drop off point the pin of the sheet came loose
and one of the children fell into Port na Delig. The other
two were drowned and he said the mission was accomplished.
The bay that the one son had fallen into was guarded by the Druidess.
She sent the son to where his father Kian, lived. He gave
the baby to his brother Goban the smith who taught the child his
own work and he became skilled in every manner of craft and handiwork.
The child was named Lugh. When he had become a youth the
Danaans placed him in charge of Duach where he lived until he
reached manhood.
