WHAT ARE RUNES - The Norse peoples used an
alphabetic system from their earliest existance up through
the middle ages. The alphabet to the Norse peoples
were known as Runes. It was said in the old myths
that Odin himself gave his eye for the knowledge of
the Runes themselves. Not only were Runes a written
alphahbet, but runes were symbols of divination and
magic. With Roman influence spreading, Runes fell
into disuse and would soon be forgotten if not for
all the written records that the Norse peoples kept.

Runes, unlike other alphabets which just symbolize
sounds actually have a meaning behind them. For
example, the first Rune known as "Fehu" is Germanic
for "cattle." Runes were also used to predict
outcomes of battles as well as write spells.

Runes have complex interrelations that are hard to
decipher. There are three groups, also known as
aetts, of runes. The overall meaning of each rune is
nigh-impossible now to understand, but several
historians have been researching it. We do know,
however, that the Norse used runes to embody their
physical and magickal worlds using a written language.

and their meanings.

The Norse believed that by writing runes, as they
said them aloud, that the magic in the symbols was
being released. A person writing the runes would
often speak their name before or after the rune was
written, to instill the magic within that person.
Runes were often found in just one symbol segments..
or in segments of two or more, known as Runic Scripts.

Runic Scripts were a sort of shorthand spell that had
a variety of effects. A spellcaster could easily
create several combinations for their own good. Runes
could also form together to make bindrunes.
Historically, these bindrunes were used to conserve
space and such, but were believed to actually give the
rune a more powerful magical aura.

Runes were often cut into wood, stone or bone. After
that, they were colored, usually with red paint. The
spellcaster might also use his or her own blood. This
was another way to link the magic directly to the
person. The runes were then spoken or sung aloud to
'empower' them. The spell was then 'sent' to its
destination by burning it. However, unless the item was
a talisman of some sorts, it was not 'sent.' After all
of this was done, the spellcaster would make an offering
to the Gods and Goddesses which usually consisted of
drink.
