Alfheim - The realm of the Light Elves and their ruler, Frey Asgard - Just like the Greek Mount Olympus, Asgard was the kingdom of the chief gods, the Aesir. All the Gods had their own halls and such in the realm of Asgard. On the edges of Asgard was a defensive wall with a great forest surrounding that. This is also where the wind formed - from the Giant Hraesvelg's mighty winds. Bifrost - Known as the bridge of the Gods, the Gods would cross it to hold counsel every day. Thor, on the other hand, would have to travel through the rivers on either side of the bridge. The bridge was covered in flame to keep out unworthy beings from passing into Asgard. It is also said that Bifrost is the rainbow we see, and the red in the rainbow is the flames upon the bridge. Hel - Realm of the dead, Hel was definitely not a place for mortal occupants of Midgard. To get to the realm of Hel, one would have to travel through the land of mountain giants. Hel is also the name of the Goddess of the Underworld. Jotunheim - This was the realm of the Jotuns - another word for giants. Midgard - Realm of the mortal humans, it was a fairly plain place in retrospect to the rest of the Norse universe. Midgard itself means 'middle earth' or 'middle garden.' Muspelheim - A fire realm that was home to the fire giants. The fire giants were sons of Muspel who were ruled by Surt. Nidavellir - This was the region of the Dwarves, sometimes called Dark Elves. This region was underground. Niflheim - Opposite to the region of Muspelheim, Niflheim was the realm of cold. Niflheim was also home to the goddess Hel. Vanaheim - Home of the Vanir, a realm of much mystery. We know very little of the Vanir's home world, but we do know that it exists. It is referred to when Ragnarok occurs that Njord will return there. This also suggests that the realm of the Vanir will not be affected by Ragnarok. Yggdrasil -Known as the Norse World Tree, its branches were said to have extended out to all the known worlds, its roots extending into three of them. Yggdrasil's roots extend into Asgard, the realm of the Frost Giants, and the third extends into the realm of Niflheim. Odin was said to have gained the knowledge of the Runes when he and his mighty steed rode upon the great tree. The tree was a giver and supporter of life, producing honeydew and special berries that would help with fertility. The first humans, Ask and Embla were created from trees, and the last two humans in the coming of Ragnarök will hide in the tree during the chaos, only to rise again and restart humanity. |
