The River Styx was the crossing place from the mortal world to death.  Charon was this evil spirit thing whose “job” was to row the “newlydeads” across.  When Achilles was a baby, Thetis, his mother, dipped him in the River Styx.  She wasn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer and her slight mistake was fatal.  The River Styx was about as real as a pair of fake teeth.
