Mount Olympus was the dwelling place of the gods and goddesses.  It was not always peaceful, but overall it was a pretty nice place to live.  Only immortals could abide there.  Hera "kicked" her son, Hephaestus, off of Mount Olympus- literally!  All of the twelve supreme gods lived there except for Poseidon, Pan, Hades, and Hestia.  Mount Olympus was very high up, so the gods could easily look down and see what the mortals were up to.
