Chapter Five - Harpies

Harpies were very frightening creatures.  They were winged monsters with the faces of ugly old women.  The winged creatures were made of the monsters Aello, Celaeno, and Ocypete.  The Greeks probably saw them as over-seers of the stormy winds.  The Harpies would pick up people from the surface world in their claws, and then take them to the Underworld.  Then they would torture the innocent victim and that unlucky person would never be seen again.  The name “harpy” is derived from the Greek word that means “snatcher”.
