Animals and their Meanings

Antelope - Symbolized grace and elegance.
Bee - Was supposedly the tears of the Sun-God (Re). Used as sweetener & medicinal unguents. Collected beeswax.
Bull - Strength, Masculinity, Fertility.
Cat - Important both as pet and symbol of deities. Jungle cat (Felis Chaus) and African Wild Cat (Felis Silvestris Libyca). Egyptian word for Cat was Miw.
Cow - Had Motherly and Domestic qualities.
Dog - Egyptian name is iwiw. Loyal, Brave, Reliable, Faithful.
Falcon - Sacred animal. Guardian deity of the ruler. Protection.
Frog - Called kerer. Fertility, Creation, Regeneration. Tadpole (called a hefnefer) was Hieroglyph for 100,000. Found decorating the SHEN ring or notched staff representing years, thus wishing the king a reign of 100,000 years.
Hippo - Females - Childbirth, Mothers, pregnant women. Males - nuisance and doer of evil.
Lion - Guardians of horizons. Slayer, Past and Future.
Snake - Evil and Danger. Depiction from Book of Gates (Undulating coils of a vast snake accompanied by hieroglyphics signifying lifespan).
