A physical and occupational
therapy room is where children with disabilities exercise and practice
using their muscles. This is meant to strengthen weakened muscles.
Physical therapists usually work with the large muscles. They help
you learn to walk and use your arms and legs. Occupational therapists work
with the small muscles. They'll help you with your fingers and things like
that. So if you need to practice eating, they'll give you a hand.
There are many things in
a physical and occupational therapy room you can use to exercise and
recover. A biodex is an exercising
tool that uses weights for exercising. There are large bouncy balls for
stomach and
back strengthening. There is a vistibular swing to practice balancing on.
There are also stairs for you to practice climbing stairs.
In another room, there might be an
underwater treadmill. Sometimes
gravity pulls down too much on someone's legs, and it makes it hard to
walk. That is why there is an underwater treadmill to help people with
that weakness to practice walking. The buoyancy of the water makes
it easier to walk.
In therapy rooms, they have
games you can play, also. They have plenty of board games and activities
to entertain you.
Crutches and walking sticks are
big parts of occupational and physical therapy. If
you can't walk, you need
some other way to get
around. First, if your muscles are very weak, you might use a wheelchair.
Then after you get stronger, you might step up to some crutches or
walkers.
