Achomavi Mythology - Creation
The Achomavi, a Native American tribe of North California, pass on their history through oral and artistic tradition.
According to the Achomavi, Coyote and Silver Fox, the first beings, were created when clouds and mist condensed. They imagined a boat to live in, and it came in existence. Although they lived happily in the boat, they eventually became bored with their fruitless lives.
One day, Silver Fox put Coyote to sleep. He combed his hair and spread the hair across the world's waters. He thought of the existence of trees, rocks, bushes, and stones, and created the natural world, correcting every imperfection.
The boat landed on a new land, and Coyote woke up to hungrily gobble the fruits of the New World. He ate the cherries and crickets that populated the world Silver Fox had created. After eating, the two decided to settle down and begin living in the world.
