Hurricane Safety



Before the start of a hurricane season:
  • Prepare a safe escape route anticipating to drive at least 20 to 50 miles to a safe destination.
  • Have disaster supplies available including:
    • First aid kit
    • Emergency food and bottled water
    • Flash light and extra batteries
    • Portable, battery-operated radio
    • Medicines, such as aspirin
    • Durable shoes
    • Money
  • If you have pets, you must make arrangements as to where they will be secured because they are not allowed in emergency shelters. As a result, make sure to contact local animal shelters.
  • Teach all family members hurricane safety procedures including to call 9-1-1, the police, and the fire department in case of emergencies.
  • Make sure all windows are protected by plywood paanels or permanent shutters.
  • Trim off dead branches from trees.
  • Discuss emergency communication plans and a meeting place with all family members in case anyone is separated.
During a hurricane watch:
  • Listen to the radio or the television for updates on the hurricane.
  • Make sure to have all emergency supplies on hand.
  • Make sure there's gasoline in the car.
  • Board up all windows.
  • Bring in all outside furniture, toys, etc.
  • Plan evacuation.
  • Store drinking water in jugs.
  • Place valuables in a waterproof container in the highest, most secure place in the house.
  • Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting.
During a hurricane warning:
  • Do NOT use the elevators.
  • If in a mobile home, secure tie downs and leave at once.
  • If you are secured in your home:
    • Stay AWAY from glass and windows.
    • Have all emergency supplies ready.
    • Turn all appliances off if power is lost.
  • If evacuation is needed:
    • Unplug all appliances and turn off electricity and the main water.
    • Bring emergency supplies and blankets and sleeping bags as shelter.
    • Leave as soon as you secure your house.
After a hurricane:
  • Listen to the radio for authorities to give the all clear.
  • Help the injured and call for help.
  • Do not go near dangling power lines.
  • When returning to your house, enter with caution. There may be wild animals.
  • Ventilate and dry your house. Open the windows.
  • Check for spoiled foods in the refrigerator and the freezer.
  • Avoid driving.
  • Only use the phone in emergencies.
  • Check for gas leaks, electrical system damages, sewage and water line damages around the house.
