History

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus existed in the city of Halicarnassus, which is now the present-day of Bodrum in southwest Turkey. It was constructed for King Mausollos of Caria, who ruled from 377-353 BC. The idea to construct a monument that would serve as the king’s resting place was created by the king’s wife and his sister. The actual construction of the Mausoleum was completed in 350 BC, three years after King Mausollos passed away.
