The lighthouse stood for around 1700 years, before being destroyed by a series of devastating earthquakes during the 14th century. Scholars believe that some of the original building material can be found in the walls that guard the entrance to Alexandria. However, recent diving expeditions have found that many remnants lay on the seafloor, leading to the theory that the lighthouse toppled into the sea when it finally collapsed.
