The Lighthouse of Alexandria

Introduction History Outcome

The waters of the Mediterranean were, at many times, unpredictable and dangerous, especially around the northern coast of Egypt. As a result, it became necessary to construct a lighthouse that would guide ships near the shore safely into port. The lighthouse of Alexandria not only served this purpose, but many others as well. It was a signal that would both ward off enemies and welcome allies at the same time. The pharaohs of Egypt would also use the lighthouse as a center to welcome many important visitors into their kingdom.
