The Seven Wonders of the Ancient WorldThe Lighthouse of AlexandriaIntroduction History Outcome The waters of the Mediterranean were, at many times, unpredictable and dangerous, especially around the northern coast of Egypt. As a result, it became necessary to construct a lighthouse that would guide ships near the shore safely into port. The lighthouse of Alexandria not only served this purpose, but many others as well. It was a signal that would both ward off enemies and welcome allies at the same time. The pharaohs of Egypt would also use the lighthouse as a center to welcome many important visitors into their kingdom.
