The monument stood only for 56 years as an earthquake toppled it in 226 BC. It fell on the dry land near the port, so nearly all the remnants of the statue were found. The people of Rhodes decided to not rebuild the colossus since they believed that the gods destroyed it, and to rebuild it would not be in their best interests. This did not stop the tourists, however. People still came to view what once was the massive colossus until 654 AD, when Arab invaders sold the bronze used to construct the colossus and turned the remainder into coins and weapons.
